The Shilpa Shetty episode had really rocked the nation, so much so that my daughter, who otherwise is just into Cartoon and Hungama television, switched over to watching the news for any snippets of the issue between Jade ‘Goody’ and Shilpa Shetty.
But her curiosity is not what was said to her, but why such a hue and cry was created for such an episode. When I told her that is about racism (I definitely had a tough time explaining what that word meant) she replied offhandedly, “but Ma, nobody creates such a fuss when we Indians introduce our fellow countrymen as a Bengali, a Bihari, a Madrassi, etc.
How true, here the world is debating about whether Shilpa Shetty was ridiculed or not, when all the while we continue to do this for every faux passé made by our fellow countrymen and never fail to retort “oye Bangali……., Sardar…. Etc.”
